Mmmmm, Gyro(ball)

Is the gyroball real? Yeah, I think so. Have I seen it before? Probably. Did I know I was seeing it? Hell no, because it’s not easy to look at a pitcher’s grip and I haven’t seen enough gyroballs to truly distinguish it from a slider or any other offspeed offering. Anyway, just watch the video below. It’s with the Rangers’ C.J. Wilson (a proud member of Havana Industriales!), who is planning on unleashing it in games.

It’s pretty cool to see someone talk about the pitch openly. Not only is it trapped behind a language barrier with Dice-K, but Matsuzaka seems to revel about playing coy with the actual existence and use of the pitch.
