Wait a Minute—the Pirates do Something Right??!!
Believe it or not, the Pirates might finally be crawling their way out of the deep dark hole they have inhabited for the past decade and a half. Granted, it will be a few years until they can compete, but the new leadership looks like it actually has a clue, re-signing young starter Ian Snell to a bargain contract of 3 years, $8 million. The deal includes options for 2011 and 2012, and apparently Snell is happy with it despite the relatively measly pay—especially when you consider recent deals like the 8 year $350 million deal given to Carlos “1.5 K/9″ Silva (okay, maybe I was exaggerating on the contract a little).
If the Pirates can hold on to their solid core of young arms (Snell, Gorzelanny, Capps), successfully integrate prospects like Steve Pearce and Andrew McCutchen, and actually start drafting well, then they might contend for a winning record by 2011 or so. That may not sound particularly uplifting to most MLB fans, but to Pittsburgh fans who had to live through 6 years of Dave Littlefield as GM, it is quite a positive statement. Here’s to hoping Pittsburgh’s PNC Park hosts a winning team before the 2012 presidential election.
