Five Years Ago, the (Baseball) World Changed

And for the better, at least from our perspective. Five years ago yesterday David Americo Arias Ortiz signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal with the Red Sox.

Oh sure, there were plenty of other things that had to happen for the Red Sox to transform from perennial bridesmaids to an almost-dynasty (a big thank you to Jeremy Giambi for getting hurt), but Ortiz’s signing was easily the single most important event that turned Boston into a baseball power for the first time in a century.

And in case you were wondering, yes it is really slow these days.
