As the A-Rod Turns

Alas, back to non-porn-related baseball news.

Looks like Slappy McBluelips wants back on the Yankees and is willing to keep Scott Boras out of the loop to do so (a condition of the Yankees’ for negotiating). If Rodriquez resigns he’ll have to take a significant pay cut in order to make up for the subsidy New York lost after he opted out (approximately $21 million, not exactly small change).

This all seems very strange. I mean, didn’t A-Rod opt out in order to make MORE money? And if he opted out simply to get out of the Bronx, why is he groveling like Bernie Bernbaum in “Miller’s Crossing” in order to get back in (”Look into your heart, Mr. Steinbrenner, look into your heart!”)? Maybe nobody’s interested in A-Rod at the exorbitant price Boras is calling for, but I have to think somebody’s willing to offer him at least what he was earning on his last contract. The article suggests the possibility that this is all a ploy to get the bidding going, but that seems kind of extreme, but then again it also seems totally Borasian. Let’s put it this way, if this is for real and A-Rod actually pays $21 million to get back on the Yankees (yes, he’ll still get a new gigantic contract, but still) and essentially fires Scott “Satan” Boras to do so, I’ll be legitimately stunned.
